1.1 Background of the Study
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education plays a critical role in preparing the next generation of professionals in fields essential for national development. However, in many regions of Nigeria, including Lokoja South in Kogi State, there is limited engagement with STEM subjects among students, especially in rural communities (Ahmed & Usman, 2023). Animated films, with their ability to simplify complex topics and present them in an engaging format, have become an effective tool in promoting STEM education.
This study seeks to explore the role of animation in promoting STEM education in Lokoja South, with a particular focus on how animated films can inspire interest in STEM fields among young people. Animation offers a unique opportunity to make STEM subjects more accessible and appealing by illustrating abstract concepts in a fun and engaging way.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of STEM education, students in Lokoja South often face challenges in engaging with these subjects, due to a lack of resources and inadequate teaching methods. This study aims to investigate how animation can serve as an effective medium for enhancing STEM education and increasing students' interest in these crucial fields (Salihu & Bello, 2024).
